Spaghetti Bolognese | Raising Munchies

I have a serious weakness when it comes to pasta. I wish it wasn’t true! This makes it REALLY hard to stick to a paleo or grain free diet. Even gluten free, as I am not too keen on the gluten free pastas.

To make matters worse I actually lived in Italy and learned how to make all types of wonderful pasta dishes while I was there. So for now pasta will remain something we occasionally enjoy. It’s like an old friend, hard to say goodbye to. :)

The recipe I’m sharing today is actually not one I brought home from Italy. It was gifted to us by a family member in South Africa. Pretty funny, Italian food via South Africa. Haha! Anyways, IT’S GOOD! You will love it!

If you didn’t already know, spaghetti bolognese is spaghetti with meat sauce. A little tip with this recipe, use the best quality ingredients and you will get the best results. The flavor will be rich and complex, not swimming in tomato sauce and spices. It is very filling, a stick to your ribs kind of meal.

Spaghetti Bolognese

Ingredients
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 2.5 oz pancetta, diced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion chopped fine
  • 1 large carrot chopped fine
  • 1 large stick celery chopped fine
  • 2 tbs tomato paste
  • 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 1½ c beef broth
  • 1 c red wine
  • pinch nutmeg
  • pinch sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. Add butter and oil to a large saucepan. Heat over medium heat and add pancetta. Cook till browned.
  2. Once browned add chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté till cooked through.
  3. Stir in ground beef and brown. Making sure to break up any large chunks of meat.
  4. Add tomato paste and stir into ground beef mixture till incorporated.
  5. Stir in broth, red wine, and diced tomatoes.
  6. Add nutmeg, sugar, and salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Bring to a boil, cover, then reduce to simmer. Gently simmer covered for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the lid and continue to simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
  9. The liquid should start to reduce and give you a thicker sauce.
  10. Serve over spaghetti, tagliatelle, polenta, zucchini noodles, or spaghetti squash.
  11. Garnish with grated parmesan and enjoy.
